The Cairns community has contributed AUD $11,647.07 towards flood relief efforts in Nepal, with community groups, businesses and individuals joining forces to support people affected by the disaster.
GOPIO Cairns Inc. worked with the North Queensland Nepalese Community to coordinate fundraising through the “Cairns Stands with Nepal” appeal.
The GoFundMe campaign received 29 donations and raised AUD $5,783. The money was transferred to the North Queensland Nepalese Community as part of the wider relief effort before being passed on to the Government of Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.
A fundraising dinner organised with Gurkhas Himalayan Nepalese Restaurant generated further contributions, helping take the total raised through the broader Cairns community effort to AUD $11,647.07.
The appeal brought together organisations and community groups representing different cultural backgrounds across Far North Queensland.
Those involved included the North Queensland Nepalese Community, CADCAI, Cairns African Association, Fiji Community Association of Far North Queensland, Kenyans in Cairns, Gurkhas Himalayan Nepalese Restaurant, PNG & Wantoks Association Cairns Inc, Cairns Bhutanese Community Inc, Which-Way Connect and Centacare FNQ.
GOPIO Cairns thanked the participating organisations and the individual donors who contributed to the appeal.
The fundraising effort was organised as a collective community response, with groups across Cairns coming together to support flood relief in Nepal.
The funds raised through the community initiatives were ultimately directed to Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund, with organisers saying the aim was to ensure assistance raised in Cairns reached the relief effort in Nepal.
