Federal Minister for Multicultural Affairs Anne Aly has extended her wishes to Hindu Australians celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, while also acknowledging the difficult circumstances facing members of the Nepali Australian community following devastating floods in Nepal.
In a message marking the festival, Dr Aly said Ganesh Chaturthi provided an opportunity for families and communities to come together through faith, tradition and celebration.
“To Hindu Australians celebrating across the country, I send my warmest wishes as you honour Lord Ganesha and come together in family, faith and community,” she said.

Ganesh Chaturthi is observed by Hindus in Australia and around the world, with celebrations commonly involving prayers, religious ceremonies and gatherings with family and community members.
Dr Aly said celebrations across Australia would see homes and temples filled with prayer and activity, as families continued traditions passed down through generations.
Her message also addressed members of the Nepali Australian community, many of whom have been affected by the situation in Nepal.
Nepal has been dealing with the aftermath of devastating floods, with communities facing loss and disruption. For Australians with family and connections in Nepal, the situation has also brought concerns about the safety and wellbeing of loved ones overseas.
Dr Aly acknowledged those who are grieving, waiting for information or supporting relatives from Australia.
“As Nepal continues to recover from devastating floods, many here in Australia are grieving, waiting for news, and supporting family and loved ones from afar. My thoughts are with you,” she said.
The Minister said the festival could bring a sense of connection for those celebrating, while recognising that the period may be difficult for people dealing with uncertainty or loss.
“May this Ganesh Chaturthi bring joy and connection to all those celebrating, and comfort to those carrying grief or worry at this time,” she said.
She concluded her message by wishing Hindu Australians, their families and communities a joyful and meaningful Ganesh Chaturthi.
