The Governor-General’s XI will take on New Zealand in a Twenty20 match at North Sydney Oval on Thursday, 15 October, as part of preparations for Australia’s upcoming T20 series against the White Ferns.
The fixture, played under lights, will bring together established Australian players and emerging talent against the former ICC Women’s T20 World Cup champions.
The Governor-General’s XI was established during the 2015-16 season to support and promote women’s cricket. The annual fixture has since become part of the Australian women’s cricket calendar, providing players with an opportunity to gain match experience against international opposition.
For the third consecutive summer, Governor-General Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC will lead the side.
The match will again include representation from the Australian Defence Force, with Lieutenant Meera Hyderabad confirmed to take part. A wicketkeeper-batter and Artillery Officer in the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery, Hyderabad will join the GG’s XI for this season’s fixture.
Mostyn said leading the team was an honour and welcomed the opportunity to celebrate the depth of women’s cricket in Australia.
“It is a great honour to once again lead the Governor-General’s XI in a match that celebrates the exceptional talent and depth of the women’s game in Australia,” she said.
She described the fixture as a valued part of the Australian cricket calendar and said it would provide a lead-in to Australia’s T20 series against New Zealand.
The Governor-General also paid tribute to both teams, noting Australia’s sustained success in women’s cricket and the White Ferns’ reputation as a competitive international side.
“I have no doubt both teams will put on a wonderful spectacle for cricket fans,” Mostyn said.
The match will give Australian players an opportunity to build match practice before the T20I series, while providing emerging players with a chance to test themselves against an international team.
Cricket Australia’s Head of Performance for Women’s Cricket and National Selector, Shawn Flegler, said selection for the Governor-General’s XI was valued by players.
“Being selected in the Governor-General’s XI is a special honour and an opportunity that players genuinely value,” Flegler said.
He said the match would provide useful preparation ahead of the T20I series and allow emerging players to perform against quality international opposition.
The fixture will be held as a free, non-ticketed event at North Sydney Oval, allowing cricket fans to attend without purchasing tickets.
The match will also be broadcast live on Foxtel and Kayo Sports.
With the Australia-New Zealand T20I series to follow, the Governor-General’s XI fixture will provide an early opportunity for players to adapt to match conditions and build momentum ahead of the international contests.
The annual match also continues its focus on providing a platform for women’s cricket, bringing established players and emerging talent together in a fixture that has been part of the Australian cricket calendar since 2015-16.
