Austral will host a new community event on Sunday 13 September, bringing together food, music, markets and cultural performances for a free family day at Scalabrini Austral.
The inaugural Live Easy Community Market Day will run from 10am to 3pm at 65 Edmondson Avenue, with organisers aiming to celebrate the cultural diversity of Liverpool and surrounding communities.
The event draws inspiration from the Italian Festival previously held in Austral and will recognise the contribution of migrant families who helped shape the area, while highlighting the many cultures represented across the region.
Liverpool is home to residents from more than 140 countries, with more than half of the population speaking a language other than English, according to the event organisers.
The market will feature a range of food stalls, including traditional Italian pasta, fish and chips, Turkish gözleme, gelato, gingerbread treats and coffee.
Visitors can also browse stalls selling Filipino handcrafts and jewellery, pre-loved items, fair trade products, plants and soaps. Religious sisters and residents from Scalabrini Austral will also take part as stallholders.
Families will have access to free rainbow face painting and henna hand painting, along with balloons and a kindy petting zoo. Visitors are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and make use of the site’s open green spaces.
A Talent Show will provide one of the day’s main entertainment features, with performers of different ages and backgrounds taking part.
The programme is expected to include martial arts, poetry, dance performances, an appearance from a local Indian dance school, and Filipino cultural dances presented by PASACI and SAFSI. A women’s health organisation will also feature in the performances.
Liverpool City Council is sponsoring the event, which organisers say is intended to encourage community participation and intercultural connection.
Free shuttle buses will operate between Leppington Station and the event throughout the day, while on-site and street parking will be available.
