Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has marked Indian Independence Day with a pledge to strengthen Australia’s relationship with India, paying tribute to the country’s independence movement and the contribution of Australians of Indian heritage.
India marks its Independence Day on August 15, commemorating the end of British colonial rule in 1947.
Taylor said the anniversary recognised the efforts of those involved in India’s independence movement and the country’s development in the decades since.
“On 15 August 1947, the dream of a free and sovereign India was achieved through the determination, deeds and sacrifice of so many freedom fighters,” Taylor said.
“From the struggle for liberty to the pursuit of building a modern nation, India’s journey has been inspiring.”
Taylor said India’s economic growth and strategic weight had made it increasingly important to Australia and the region.
“Today, India has emerged as the world’s largest democracy and one of the fastest-growing major economies. It plays a leading role in the security, stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific,” he said.
Australia and India have steadily expanded their economic and security relationship over the past decade, with cooperation extending across trade, defence, critical minerals, education and the Indo-Pacific.
The relationship has also become an area of bipartisan agreement in Canberra, with both Labor and the Coalition backing closer ties with New Delhi.
Taylor said the Coalition would continue that approach.
“The Coalition remains steadfast in its commitment to elevating Australia and India’s bilateral relationship,” he said. “That commitment was on display when I had the great pleasure of welcoming Prime Minister Modi to Australia last month.”
Taylor also focused on the growing Indian Australian population, which has become one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing migrant communities.
“Across Australia, many Australians of Indian heritage will come together to celebrate this special day and acknowledge India’s remarkable historical achievements,” he said.
“Australians of Indian ancestry make an invaluable contribution to our nation across business, science, medicine, education, the arts, sport and countless other industries.”
Taylor said the anniversary was an opportunity to recognise both India’s development since independence and the relationship between the two countries.
“On this anniversary of India’s independence, we celebrate the extraordinary achievements of modern India, acknowledge the enduring friendship between our two countries, recognise the contributions of generations of Australians of Indian ancestry, and look forward to strengthening the deep bonds between Australia and India,” he said.
“Happy Indian Independence Day.”
