Victoria’s tap and go public transport payment system is being expanded to more than 2,500 myki-enabled buses, allowing passengers to pay for journeys with a bank card, smartphone or smartwatch.

The rollout will take place in stages, with services in Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour, Geelong, Traralgon, Warragul, Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury, Berwick, Cranbourne and the Yarra Valley among the first areas to receive the technology.

All bus routes across Melbourne are expected to have tap and go enabled by Sunday, 26 July.

Once the rollout is complete, passengers will be able to use contactless payment at every myki-enabled train station, tram and bus in Victoria. The system has already recorded more than 2.3 million tap and go journeys since trials began in March.

Passengers will be able to check whether tap and go is available on a bus by looking for the Visa or Mastercard logo on the ticket reader. During the rollout, passengers are being advised to continue carrying their myki card in case the bus they are travelling on has not yet been enabled.

Those transferring between bus services should also continue using myki until the full bus network rollout is complete.

Concession passengers, seniors and people under 18 are being advised to continue using their concession or free Youth myki cards. Passengers who prefer to use myki will also be able to continue doing so.

Station staff will be available to assist passengers as the new payment system is introduced.

Acting Minister for Public and Active Transport Nick Staikos said the expansion would make public transport easier to use for passengers across Victoria.

“From Sunday, tap and go will progressively roll out on buses across Victoria, making getting around even easier,” Staikos said.

He said more than two million tap and go journeys had already been recorded, pointing to the growing use of contactless payments on the public transport network.

The rollout is part of the Victorian Government’s wider move to expand contactless payment options across public transport. While the government has promoted the initiative as a way to make travel more convenient, passengers will still need to use myki for concession fares and during parts of the rollout where tap and go has not yet been activated.

Further information about contactless payments is available through the Victorian Government’s public transport website.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
