Bibi Ji in Carlton will mark its second birthday on 11 July with a one-night collaboration dinner that brings together Indian and Indo-Fijian cooking traditions in a shared menu shaped by personal histories and family recipes.

The Lygon Street restaurant, known for its Punjabi home-style approach to Indian food, will host chef-owner Amar Singh alongside Sydney-based food writer and broadcaster Fuzz Ali for a ticketed dinner running from 6.30pm to 9pm.

The pair will present a menu developed for the occasion, drawing on Indian and Fijian influences and the culinary connections between the two regions. Both chefs trace family roots to Punjab, with Ali’s family history shaped by migration to Fiji under indenture, a journey that has influenced the food traditions he works with today.

Singh said the collaboration offers a chance to explore shared influences through food while working with familiar techniques and ingredients in a different context.

Ali, whose work spans writing, broadcasting and recipe development across SBS Food and other platforms, said the dinner reflects a personal connection to the cuisine, shaped by family cooking traditions passed down through generations.

Bibi Ji opened on Lygon Street in 2024 and was founded on the idea of bringing home-style Punjabi cooking into Melbourne’s dining scene. The venue is part of Singh’s wider hospitality work, which includes Horn Please in North Fitzroy, Dhaba at the Mill in Kyneton and co-ownership of Daughter in Law.

The anniversary dinner will be held at 179 Lygon Street, Carlton, with tickets priced at $95 per person. Bookings are available online via the restaurant’s reservation platform.
