More than 225 people from across South East Queensland gathered in Brisbane to mark International Yoga Day 2026, reflecting growing community interest in yoga as a tool for health, wellbeing and social connection.
The event was held at the Croatian Club in Rocklea and was jointly organised by the Hindu Council of Australia (Queensland Chapter) and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS). Community members, elected representatives, volunteers and wellness advocates attended the morning programme, which focused on physical fitness, mental wellbeing and community engagement.
Among those present were Speaker of the House of Representatives Milton Dick MP, Stretton MP James Martin, Mount Ommaney MP Jess Pugh, HSS Australia Head of Public Relations Dr Anil Asthana, HSS Queensland Sanghchalak Dr Anil Dalsania, and Queensland Police Liaison Officers Mary Kenyi and Maninder Kaur.
Proceedings began with a lamp-lighting ceremony and the unveiling of the International Yoga Day 2026 poster. Organisers said the opening reflected the event’s focus on healthy living, emotional wellbeing and stronger community connections.
Participants then took part in guided yoga sessions, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques led by experienced instructors. The activities introduced practical approaches that attendees could incorporate into their daily routines to support physical health, stress management and mindfulness.
More than 20 community, cultural, faith and service organisations were represented at the gathering, highlighting broad support for initiatives that encourage wellbeing and social cohesion across Queensland’s diverse communities.
Organisers said yoga continues to attract people from different backgrounds because of its focus on balancing physical activity with mental and emotional wellbeing. Throughout the morning, participants of different ages and cultures joined the sessions together, reflecting the broad appeal of the practice.
International Yoga Day is observed annually on 21 June following its adoption by the United Nations in 2014. Events are held worldwide to raise awareness of yoga and its role in supporting healthy lifestyles.
Organisers thanked volunteers, instructors, community leaders and participants for contributing to the event’s success and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
As communities across Australia joined global celebrations, the Rocklea gathering highlighted the role community events can play in encouraging healthy habits, social connection and shared experiences.
The event concluded with a message of collective wellbeing, with organisers encouraging participants to continue incorporating yoga and mindfulness into their everyday lives.
