FNQ Multicultural Business Network launched in Cairns to support diverse entrepreneurs

Cairns has launched a new business organisation aimed at supporting multicultural entrepreneurs and strengthening economic participation across Far North Queensland.

The Far North Queensland (FNQ) Multicultural Business Network was officially launched this week, bringing together business owners, community leaders and members of culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

The network has been established to provide support, mentoring and networking opportunities for multicultural business owners while helping them navigate the broader business environment in the region.

Organisers say the initiative responds to the growing contribution of multicultural businesses to the Cairns economy and seeks to create stronger links between entrepreneurs, community organisations and the wider commercial sector.

The FNQ Multicultural Business Network will focus on culturally aware mentoring, business development support and professional networking opportunities designed to address barriers often faced by entrepreneurs from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Supporters of the initiative say the network has a dual purpose: helping businesses grow while encouraging stronger community connections across Far North Queensland.

Cairns has become increasingly diverse in recent years, with migrant-owned businesses playing a growing role in sectors ranging from hospitality and retail to professional services and tourism. The creation of a dedicated multicultural business network reflects broader efforts to ensure these businesses have access to support systems and opportunities for growth.

Organisers believe stronger engagement between multicultural businesses and community organisations can contribute to economic development while fostering greater social inclusion.

The network is also seeking partnerships with community organisations and service providers to expand its reach and deliver programs that support business owners from diverse backgrounds.

Among the organisations identified as a potential partner is Centacare, whose multicultural programs align closely with the network’s objectives. Organisers say collaboration with community agencies could help ensure business support initiatives are accessible to a wider range of residents while contributing to community wellbeing.

The launch comes as regional centres across Australia look to harness the economic contribution of migrant-owned businesses and support greater participation in local economies. Organisers say the FNQ Multicultural Business Network aims to become a long-term platform for collaboration, business growth and community engagement throughout Far North Queensland.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
