Spotswood station designs released

Families in Melbourne’s inner west are a step closer to changes at Spotswood railway station, with early designs released for a new station and rail bridge linked to the removal of the Hudsons Road level crossing.

The Victorian Government said the project would remove what it described as a dangerous and congested crossing used by more than 6,600 vehicles each day.

According to project information released this week, boom gates at Hudsons Road can remain down for up to 50 minutes during the morning peak, contributing to delays for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists in Spotswood and surrounding parts of Melbourne’s west.

The plans include a new elevated Spotswood railway station with entrances at Hudsons Road and McLister Street. The heritage-listed station building on Hope Street will remain as part of the updated design.

The project will elevate the rail line and create additional open space beneath the structure, including landscaping, seating areas and improved walking and cycling links.

The government said the designs were shaped through community feedback, with residents calling for safer connections, additional open space and protection of the suburb’s heritage character.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said the project would improve safety and traffic movement in the area.

“Removing the dangerous Hudsons Road level crossing and building a new Spotswood Station will make journeys safer and less congested for local families.”

Ms Williams said the project formed part of a wider program across Melbourne’s west.

“It’s one of five level crossings that are going for good in Melbourne’s inner-west, making the Werribee Line level crossing free by 2029”.

The level crossing removals are planned across Newport, Spotswood, Yarraville and Altona as part of broader transport upgrades on the Werribee railway line.

Member for Williamstown Melissa Horne said the Hudsons Road works, alongside restrictions on truck movements, would change how locals move through the suburb.

“The removal of the Hudsons Road level crossing, coupled with the truck ban, will transform Spotswood and make it safer and easier for locals to get around.”

Residents can review the proposed designs and provide feedback through the Victorian Government consultation process.
