A state-backed live music series is set to travel beyond Melbourne, bringing a run of free performances to regional communities across Victoria from April.
The Victorian Government has announced that ALWAYS LIVE’s Victorian Vibes will stage pop-up shows in towns and regions including Ballarat, Gippsland, the Goldfields, the Bellarine, the Murray and along the Great Ocean Road. The programme is designed to place artists in streets, venues and informal settings, with each location hosting performances over a single weekend before the series moves on.
The rollout begins in Ballarat on 18 April, with a different town hosting events every second weekend through to late June. Organisers say artists and exact locations will be revealed closer to each date, keeping an element of surprise while still allowing visitors to plan their trips.
The initiative follows the earlier Melbourne Vibes series, which brought live performances into central city locations over the summer. This time, the focus shifts to regional areas, with the aim of drawing visitors and supporting local businesses such as cafés, restaurants and accommodation providers.
Accessibility has been factored into the planning, with pop-up sites located within walking distance of regional railway stations. The timing also coincides with free public transport across Victoria in April and capped V/Line fares throughout the year, which could help encourage attendance from nearby towns and the city.
Supporters of the programme say it offers a way to spread cultural activity more evenly across the state while giving local economies a lift. There is also an emphasis on providing performance opportunities for artists in settings that differ from traditional venues.
At the same time, some in the industry have pointed out that short-format events can generate bursts of activity without always leading to lasting benefits for regional music scenes. Questions remain about how initiatives like this translate into ongoing support for venues and artists once the tour moves on.
Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Steve Dimopoulos said the series is intended to make live music accessible to more Victorians, while encouraging travel within the state. Local MPs in Ballarat and the Goldfields echoed that view, linking the events to increased foot traffic and business activity in their communities.
ALWAYS LIVE chief executive Psyche Payne described the regional expansion as a continuation of the Melbourne programme, with a focus on creating shared experiences between artists and audiences in local settings. Visit Victoria chief executive Brendan McClements said the series is expected to drive visitors into regional areas, connecting them with hospitality and tourism operators.
Further details, including line-ups and specific venues, are expected in the coming weeks as the first events approach.
