ABC to relocate to New Adelaide Arts and Media Hub in CBD partnership

Adelaide’s cultural heart is set to expand, with the SA Government announcing a major partnership with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to establish a new Arts and Media Hub in the city centre.

Under the deal, the ABC will relocate from its current headquarters at Collinswood to the Tapangka development site on Franklin Street, joining the State Theatre Company, State Opera and Country Arts South Australia in what is being planned as a central gathering point for arts, performance and public media.

The Hub will be built on the former Adelaide Bus Station site, adjacent to the Adelaide Central Market, as part of the broader Tapangka precinct being developed by Renewal SA. Completion is expected by 2030 or 2031.

The project is being promoted as a long-term investment in both cultural infrastructure and the creative economy, with galleries, studios and rehearsal spaces designed to encourage collaboration between South Australia’s major arts organisations and the national broadcaster.

The Malinauskas Government has committed $51 million towards the new home for the State Theatre Company, Country Arts South Australia and State Opera, aiming to ensure continued access to theatre, opera and arts programming for audiences across the state.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said the Hub would help activate Franklin Street and offer South Australians new ways to experience and participate in the arts. He also pointed to the importance of securing a modern home for the ABC in Adelaide, supporting ongoing access to trusted news and locally produced content.

The announcement follows the government’s earlier $12 million partnership between the ABC and the South Australian Film Corporation, which has helped build a pipeline of television production in the state. As part of that collaboration, season three of the ABC series Austin will be filmed in South Australia, with shoots planned across Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills.

The production is expected to contribute more than $3 million to the state’s economy, employing local crew, department heads and extras, alongside a wide range of businesses providing services during filming.

Arts Minister Andrea Michaels described the Hub as an exciting development for South Australia’s cultural sector, noting its role in providing state-of-the-art facilities for some of the state’s most recognised organisations.

Housing and Planning Minister Nick Champion also highlighted the broader impact of the Tapangka precinct, which will include residential and commercial development, adding housing supply in a prime CBD location.

ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks welcomed the partnership, saying the move would provide a fit-for-purpose base for a modern public broadcaster while offering benefits for staff, audiences and the wider creative community.

The Hub forms part of a series of major developments reshaping Adelaide’s city centre, alongside new commercial towers, student accommodation projects and plans for further growth in the east of the CBD.

If delivered as envisioned, the Arts and Media Hub could become a central platform for performance, production and cultural life in Adelaide for decades to come.
