South.Point Shopping Centre is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors this weekend as the AUSINDIA Fair returns with a day of cultural performances, food and community activities celebrating Canberra’s multicultural community.
More than 6,000 people are expected to attend the free event on Saturday, 27 June, with organisers planning 26 cultural performances alongside traditional food stalls, community displays and family entertainment.
The fair is being presented by South.Point in partnership with the Federation of Indian Associations of ACT Inc (FINACT), with organisers saying the event aims to bring together people from different cultural backgrounds through shared experiences.
Several public figures are expected to attend, including ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, Independent Senator David Pocock, India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Nagesh Singh, Deputy High Commissioner Irina Thakur, along with other ministers, MPs and community representatives.
South.Point Marketing Manager Carole Arulantu said the shopping centre viewed multicultural events as part of its role as a community gathering place.
“South.Point thrives on enriching the community with events such as AUSINDIA Fair,” she said.
“Celebrating multiculturalism in Canberra is a responsibility of South.Point as a community hub.”
Arulantu said the event follows a strong response from the centre’s Harmony Day celebrations earlier this year and reflects its broader calendar of free community activities.
“After the tremendous success of Harmony Day and following the wonderful responses and feedback from the Canberra community, South.Point brings another colourful, vibrant and culturally diverse event in AUSINDIA Fair,” she said.
FINACT President Divya Ravikumar said the partnership would showcase Indian culture while encouraging participation from other multicultural groups across Canberra.
“FINACT is delighted to support an exciting program of performances that will showcase Indian culture, supported by several other local multicultural community groups,” she said.
Ravikumar said the organisation hopes events such as the fair help strengthen community connections and support people of Indian heritage as they settle into life in Canberra.
South.Point said it plans to continue working with community organisations to host cultural events throughout the year, providing opportunities for residents to experience different traditions and meet people from a range of backgrounds.
The AUSINDIA Fair will run from 10am to 3pm on Saturday at South.Point Shopping Centre in Tuggeranong. Admission is free.
