South Australia’s small and family businesses are set to receive new support through a government-backed program designed to make artificial intelligence feel less daunting and more practical for everyday operations. The initiative, due to open for registrations in early 2026, aims to give owners personalised guidance as they explore how AI can improve efficiency, customer service and planning.

The program is being shaped around what business owners themselves have been saying. Many are keen to adopt digital tools because they see potential benefits, yet they’re unsure how to start or how to use AI safely. The government says this gap in confidence and capability is exactly what the pilot is meant to address. Participants will receive one-on-one help to build plans or roadmaps that suit their specific business needs rather than generic advice.

To deliver the program, the Malinauskas Government is calling for experienced service providers to come forward. Selected partners will be eligible for up to $370,000 in funding across an 18-month period from 2025 to 2027. Their role will focus on direct mentoring, coaching and practical support for businesses seeking to understand, test or adopt AI tools in a controlled and informed way.

Minister Andrea Michaels said her conversations with business owners made it clear that interest in AI is growing quickly, as many can already see how these tools might help with productivity and day-to-day tasks. She added that the program is designed to meet businesses where they are, offering structured help that builds capability without overwhelming teams.

Michael Brown echoed the sentiment, saying small businesses stand to gain a great deal if they understand how to apply AI effectively. He noted that the new program aims to guide businesses through that process so they can make informed decisions and implement tools that genuinely support growth.

Applications for delivery partners are open until 5pm on Friday 5 December 2025. More information can be found at business.sa.gov.au/programs/ai-capability-pilot-program.

The program will now be watched closely by industry groups and service providers, many of whom have been calling for clearer pathways to help small businesses engage with emerging technologies. If well-executed, the initiative may provide a model for how governments can support digital readiness without pushing businesses into tools they’re not equipped to manage.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
