European transport giant Flix is bringing its bright-green buses to Australian highways, with services set to begin on 20 November 2025. The initial routes will connect Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney—one of the nation’s busiest travel corridors—with stops at major airports to link local and international travellers.
André Schwämmlein, CEO and Founder of Flix, said: “We are proud to officially mark our entry into Australia, our 45th market, a significant milestone in our mission to shape the future of long-distance bus travel. This launch reflects how our scalable tech platform and partnership model enable sustainable growth across continents and reinforces our commitment to a long-term, sustainable presence in every market we enter.”
The company is offering an introductory ticket price of $9.99 to mark its Australian debut. Known for combining affordability with tech-driven convenience, FlixBus has become a major player in Europe and North America by connecting thousands of destinations through local operators using its centralised booking and pricing systems.
The launch is timed for Australia’s busy holiday season, offering travellers a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to flying or driving between east coast cities. The “golden triangle” of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane ranks among the world’s most expensive flight routes by distance, and Flix hopes to tempt cost-conscious travellers seeking comfort without the premium.
Flix’s Australian network reflects its global strategy of building scalable systems that can expand over time. Its technology platform enables route planning, dynamic pricing and digital integration with other transport systems. The buses come with onboard WiFi, charging outlets, toilets and extra legroom, with passengers allowed one carry-on and two stowed bags at no additional cost.
Globally, Flix now connects more than 8,000 destinations across 45 countries, partnering with local transport operators under its brand. Earlier in 2025, the company announced plans to begin operating in Peru—its fourth Latin American market after Brazil, Chile and Mexico.
Marketing material for the Australian launch highlights the ease of booking through the FlixBus app, which lets users choose routes, reserve seats and track journeys in real time. The company also stresses its environmental credentials, noting that bus travel produces fewer emissions per passenger than car or plane travel.
Twelve years after its first buses began running in Germany, Flix’s arrival in Australia marks another step in its global expansion. Whether Australians will trade speed for savings remains to be seen—but by starting with $9.99 tickets, Flix is betting that many will be willing to try.
