South Australia’s coastal tourism sector is seeing an early lift from the Coast is Calling Voucher program, with almost 3,000 bookings already made and a total booking value of $1.5 million flowing back into businesses impacted by the algal bloom.

Since the allocation of vouchers earlier this week, more than 4,800 nights have been booked across coastal accommodation providers. The new $500 voucher has proven especially popular, accounting for more than 1,400 nights on its own and encouraging longer stays in regional destinations.

A total of 20,000 vouchers for both accommodation and experiences were released, each one helping stimulate visitation and spending along the state’s coastline. Demand has been strong in the school holiday period, with more than 700 bookings secured, including over 200 for the October long weekend.

Voucher holders must confirm their bookings by 24 October for travel through to the end of November, with the option to transfer vouchers to others if they are unable to use them themselves.

Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison said the uptake shows confidence in South Australia’s coast as a safe and appealing destination. She noted that the program is helping operators affected by the algal bloom while also encouraging South Australians to explore more of their own state.

Operators have echoed the positive response. Joel Hirsch, General Manager of The Big Duck Boat Tours and Spirit of the Coorong, said more than 130 vouchers had been redeemed with his companies in just 24 hours, generating over $18,000 in bookings. He said the program delivers real visitation, supporting jobs and sustaining regional economies.

West Beach Parks CEO Kate Anderson said the campaign had boosted bookings and morale, while Stephan Edwards of Echo Holiday Parks reported more than 110 voucher bookings across two parks, equating to 360 guest nights. He said the return of visitors is restoring confidence and bringing benefits to coastal communities.
