Blacktown City is gearing up for another dazzling celebration, with the return of the Diwali Lights Competition in 2025. Residents across the city are being encouraged to light up their homes for the Hindu festival of lights, which has become a fixture in the community calendar.
Blacktown is home to many South Asian families, and Diwali has grown to be part of the city’s cultural fabric. The event transforms suburbs with colour and creativity, drawing neighbours and families together to share in the spirit of the festival.
This year more than $2,500 in cash prizes is on offer, spread across Blacktown’s five wards. Categories include Best Street, which recognises neighbours who come together to create a festive atmosphere, and Best Rangoli, which highlights the intricate and colourful artworks made from sand, flower petals, flour or rice. To qualify for Best Street, at least three decorated properties from the same street must be entered, with the winning street also receiving a permanent sign acknowledging their title. Best Rangoli judging will take place between 19 and 21 October, from 8 pm to 11 pm, and is open only to properties that reach the final round.
Preliminary judging will be held on 15 and 16 October, followed by the final round on 19 October. Judges will focus on the overall appeal of decorations visible from the front of each property. The council has clarified that Christmas decorations will not be considered as part of the competition.

Diwali, an ancient Hindu festival, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness. Families traditionally light lamps and candles in and around homes and temples, with the glow said to guide Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, into homes and businesses.
Blacktown City Council is inviting residents of all backgrounds to join in the celebration by decorating their homes with lights and entering the competition online. Entry details are available on the council’s website.
