The 4th KMCC Sevens Football Tournament kicked off at Kurunjang Recreation Reserve in Melton on Saturday, drawing players, families, and supporters together for a day of sport and community celebration.

The event was launched by Member of Parliament Steve McGhie alongside Melton’s Deputy Mayor Cr Lara Carli. Both praised the organisers and volunteers for their work in hosting what has become a much-anticipated fixture for Melbourne’s Malayalee community.

Mr McGhie said it was a privilege to be part of the occasion and to see the strong engagement the tournament generates. “Thank you to Shiyas Khalid and his team of volunteers for putting on an amazing event at Kurunjang,” he said.

The KMCC Sevens format, popular in Kerala, has gained traction in Melbourne over recent years, providing a platform for young players to compete while maintaining close links to cultural roots.

Although scheduled to attend, India’s Consul General in Melbourne, Dr Sushil Kumar, was unable to be present due to illness.

Kombans FC emerged as winners of this year’s tournament, with Thekkan Kroos finishing runners-up after a spirited contest. Fourteen teams participated, including one from NSW, and volunteers, many of them young people, worked throughout the day to ensure the smooth running of matches and hospitality.

Adding to the atmosphere, the KMCC kitchen counter—operated entirely by dedicated KMCC volunteers—served Kerala food to players and spectators. A share of the profits from these counters will go towards KMCC charity activities supporting communities in both India and Australia.

Shiyas Khalid, Chairman of KMCC, extended special thanks to Stephanie Moskaljuk and Frank Moskaljuk, Secretary and President of Satellite City United Soccer Club Melton, for their kind support in helping KMCC conduct this tournament and for assisting with upcoming sports events planned at the same venue.

The KMCC (Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre) has been active in Victoria for years, promoting social cohesion through sport, culture, and community welfare initiatives. Organisers said this year’s football event was a chance to bring families together, encourage youth participation, and showcase the community’s ongoing contribution to Melbourne’s multicultural life.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.
