The Burnside Community Centre in Melbourne was buzzing with warmth and energy on 22 June as families gathered for the KMCC Family Eid Meet 2025. Hosted by the Melbourne chapter of the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC), the event brought together members of the Malayalee Muslim community along with dignitaries from various walks of public life.
Federal Minister Sam Rae, recently elevated to Cabinet, was present and honoured by the community for his appointment. Victorian MP Steve McGhie and Tej Krishnan from the Indian Consulate also joined in the celebrations, reaffirming the strong ties between local multicultural organisations and government representatives. Brother Iyas Harb, Chairman and Imam of the Melton Muslim Community, delivered a reflective talk titled How to Celebrate Eid, drawing attention to the values of gratitude, connection and renewal that underpin the festival.
While Assistant Minister Julian Hill was unable to attend due to official meetings, his message reached the audience through a heartfelt letter extending Eid greetings to the KMCC community. His absence was acknowledged, but his warm note reminded everyone of the enduring relationship between the government and Melbourne’s diverse cultural groups.
The program featured Nasheed performances by children, whose melodic recitations were met with applause and proud smiles from the crowd. These moments, simple yet powerful, formed the emotional core of the evening. For many parents in the audience, it was more than a celebration—it was a reminder of home, faith and continuity in a new country.
Eid gatherings have become more than religious observances for migrant communities in Australia—they are public markers of identity and belonging. Events like the KMCC Eid Meet blend traditional elements with local flavour, offering a chance for reflection while building new memories. Food, of course, was central to the occasion, with community volunteers ensuring that everyone left with full hearts and satisfied stomachs.
Looking ahead, Melbourne KMCC announced its next initiative: a multicultural football tournament scheduled for 23 August. The event is open to all and promises not just a day of sport but also a showcase of Kerala cuisine. As with past KMCC events, the emphasis will be on inclusion, participation and the joy of coming together.
Organising efforts were led by KMCC Ameer Shiyas Khalid and a tight-knit executive team: Rishal, Shameer, Hilal, Jafar, Mujeeb, Illyas, Shamsu, Haris, Saleem Venkitta, Shameer O.P., Shabeeb, Ajees, Swafdil and Riyas. Behind the scenes, their work ensured everything ran smoothly—from stage coordination to guest logistics and catering.
