The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) returns for its 16th edition from 14 to 24 August 2025, promising an extraordinary showcase of films, conversations, masterclasses, and star-studded appearances.

This year, Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian Vir Das will be among the festival’s key guests of honour. In a special ceremony, Das will be felicitated for his groundbreaking contributions to Indian entertainment, particularly in comedy, and for his growing influence on global audiences.

Renowned for his sharp wit and cross-cultural storytelling, Das has emerged as one of the most globally recognised comedians of Indian origin. His Netflix special Landing, which he also directed, won the 2023 International Emmy for Best Comedy, following his earlier nomination for Vir Das: For India in 2021. The New York Times described him as the artist who best “embodies the globalisation of stand-up”.

Das continues to break new ground in 2025 with his directorial debut in the upcoming film Happy Patel, co-directed and produced by Aamir Khan Films, as well as his debut book, The Outsider, marking his entry into the literary world.

Reflecting on the honour, Vir Das said, “It’s incredibly humbling to be recognised by IFFM, a festival that celebrates the diversity and strength of Indian storytelling. Comedy has always been my lens to view the world, and to be able to share that journey with global audiences—and now be celebrated for it—is truly special. I’m looking forward to being part of the festival and engaging with fellow artists and film lovers in Melbourne.”

IFFM 2025 will once again bring a diverse mix of cinema from India to Melbourne, spanning mainstream hits, regional gems, independent voices, and premieres across various languages.

The festival will take place across key venues in Melbourne and feature screenings, industry panels, in-conversation sessions, and creative workshops, creating space for dialogue between filmmakers, talent, and the community.

Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said, “We’re thrilled to bring back IFFM for its 16th year. This festival has always been a bridge between cultures, using the power of cinema to connect and inspire. Honouring Vir Das, who has become a truly global voice in comedy and storytelling, reflects the dynamic spirit of Indian creativity. We look forward to welcoming audiences to another unforgettable edition.”

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
