
Residents gathered at The Strand on Sunday morning to mark International Yoga Day 2026, joining communities around the world in recognising the role of yoga and meditation in supporting health and wellbeing.
The free event was organised by Yog Mandiram with support from the Consulate General of India in Brisbane and attracted participants from a wide range of backgrounds. Held against the backdrop of the Coral Sea, the gathering focused on the themes of health, harmony and peace.
The one-hour program included yoga, breathing exercises, meditation and community activities designed to promote physical and mental wellbeing. Participants were guided through the session by qualified yoga and meditation instructor Bhavesh Rathod, who led attendees through Om chanting, warm-up exercises, yoga postures, pranayama and meditation.
Organisers encouraged active participation throughout the morning, with activities designed to be accessible to people of different ages and experience levels. Many attendees described the session as both relaxing and energising, with the combination of movement, breathwork and meditation enhanced by the coastal setting.
International Yoga Day is observed globally on 21 June each year following its adoption by the United Nations in 2014. The annual event aims to raise awareness of yoga’s potential benefits for physical and mental health and has grown into a worldwide celebration observed across diverse communities.
The Townsville gathering was supported by several local organisations, including Shri Siddhi Vinayak Cultural Centre – North Queensland Hindu Community Inc, The Indian Sun, The Indian Royal Flavours and Townsville Hike and Explore.
Participants said the event offered an opportunity to focus on wellbeing while connecting with others in the community. Some also expressed interest in seeing more regular yoga and meditation programs held across the region.
Organisers welcomed the community response and said the positive feedback had encouraged discussions about future wellness initiatives in North Queensland.
The morning concluded with a vote of thanks and a group photograph, with attendees leaving after a session that combined physical activity, mindfulness and community engagement.
The event reflected the growing interest in yoga and meditation across regional Australia, where community-based wellness activities continue to attract participants seeking opportunities to improve health, reduce stress and build social connections.
