From stretch to stillness: Laverton joins Global Yoga Day

The Laverton Community Hub was a picture of calm and collective energy on 21 June as residents gathered to celebrate International Yoga Day 2025. Marking its eleventh year globally, the event drew people from diverse walks of life under one unifying idea: “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”

It opened with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Cr Daria Kellander, Mayor of Hobsons Bay (Altona Ward), and Cr Paddy KeysMacpherson (Laverton Ward), setting the tone for what unfolded as a warm and energising morning. “Events like this unite people across the globe and create synergy,” said Mayor Kellander, who stayed to interact with attendees and joined in the celebrations.

Taking centre stage was Dr Vidhi Sirohi, founder of YogicVidhi Yoga & Wellness Studio. Trained and certified by India’s Ministry of AYUSH and Yoga Alliance in the US, Dr Sirohi led a session that was both accessible and profound, blending movement, breath, and awareness. The practice not only focused on physical strength and flexibility but also highlighted yoga’s broader role in supporting ecological awareness and mental health.

Participants were treated to a short yoga-themed quiz, sparking lively discussion and reflection on yoga’s roots, global evolution, and current relevance. The event closed with a guided meditation led by Sister Anaya, whose gentle direction brought a collective stillness to the room. Her focus on inner calm and emotional clarity resonated with many who described the session as the most grounding part of the day.

The event was a gathering marked by inclusion and curiosity. For some, it was their first brush with yoga; for others, a cherished annual ritual. What stood out most was the sense of shared purpose—where health, both individual and communal, felt within reach.

“It’s always a privilege to be part of this day,” said Dr Sirohi in her closing remarks. She thanked the councillors and participants for their involvement, and reflected on the deeper message of yoga—connection, care, and the quiet strength of showing up.

As the mats were rolled up and the space returned to its usual hum, many left feeling lighter. Not just from the stretches, but from a morning well spent in good company.
