In a major step towards improving immigration services for the Indian diaspora, the Government of India has launched a revamped Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Portal, designed to offer a more streamlined, secure, and user-friendly experience for over five million OCI cardholders and new applicants worldwide.

The portal, now live at https://ociservices.gov.in, comes equipped with a modern interface, enhanced technical infrastructure, and several user-centric features aimed at simplifying the application and registration process for Indian-origin individuals living abroad.

The new platform introduces auto-filled registration forms, integrated online payments, application dashboards, in-built FAQs, document categorisation based on application types, and mobile responsiveness, among other upgrades. On the backend, it benefits from process automation, enhanced cybersecurity protocols including multi-factor authentication, and platform upgrades to support faster performance and cross-device compatibility, according to a press release by India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB).

Indian Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, officially launched the revamped OCI portal in New Delhi on 16 May. The launch event was attended by the Federal Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Speaking at the event, Shah said the launch reflects India’s ongoing commitment, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, to offer world-class immigration services. He emphasised the need to ensure Indian-origin citizens across the world face no hurdles when visiting or staying in India.

“The revamped portal is not just a technical upgrade—it is a step towards strengthening our connection with the global Indian community,” he said.

Key Features of the New Portal

The redesigned portal includes several user-centric enhancements:

  • User-friendly dashboard with application tracking and editable forms

  • Auto-fill capabilities and clear segregation of registration options

  • Integrated online payment system for FRRO applicants

  • Smart document categorisation and real-time eligibility display

  • Built-in tools such as image cropping and an FAQ section

  • Mobile optimisation and responsive design for a seamless experience across devices

Technical Upgrades

Alongside its new features, the portal has undergone substantial backend upgrades, including:

  • Infrastructure modernisation with high availability servers running on RedHat 9

  • Platform upgrades with updated frameworks (JDK, Struts 2.5.30, Bootstrap 5.3.0)

  • Enhanced cybersecurity through SSL/TLS encryption, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and regular vulnerability testing

  • Process automation to streamline backend workflows

  • Improved data management with centralised access and faster load times

Originally introduced in 2005 through an amendment to the Citizenship Act, the OCI scheme enables registration of Persons of Indian Origin as Overseas Citizens of India. However, individuals with Pakistani or Bangladeshi ancestry are not eligible under the scheme.
The previous OCI portal, developed in 2013, served more than 180 Indian missions abroad and 12 Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs), processing roughly 2,000 applications daily. The updated portal addresses feedback received from users and leverages the latest technology to deliver a more efficient and reliable service.

With this overhaul, the Indian government aims to bridge the technological gap and respond to valuable feedback from OCI users around the world, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening ties with the Indian diaspora.
