The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) is calling on the public to help deliver the 2026 state election, opening applications for more than 1,000 senior election official roles across the state.
These positions are vital to ensuring elections run smoothly across local councils and electoral districts, with duties ranging from supervising polling stations to overseeing vote counting and community engagement.
Acting Electoral Commissioner Dana Fleming described the recruitment drive as a chance for Victorians to play an active role in their democracy. “You don’t need previous election experience,” Ms Fleming said. “It’s all about the skills and life experience you can bring to the role – if you’re organised, have a good eye for detail, and most importantly bring a positive attitude, that’s what we’re looking for.”
Senior election officials are also tasked with reaching out to communities that have historically been under-represented at the polls, a growing priority for the VEC. This includes migrant communities, younger voters, and people with disabilities.
“We’re proud of the work our teams do to make sure every Victorian has the opportunity to have their say. At the next election, our officials will be helping more people understand their voting rights and how to take part,” Ms Fleming said.
The role is paid, requires availability during the election period, and involves both administrative and people-focused tasks. Some officials have been working with the Commission for more than two decades.
“It’s a rewarding experience. You’re part of a professional team, you’re contributing to something meaningful, and you’re meeting people from all walks of life,” Ms Fleming added.
The VEC is encouraging applications from all backgrounds. “If you’re a business owner, if you’re retired or semi-retired, if you’re a parent, if you’re an artist, or a coach of the local footy club – we want to hear from you,” she said.
Applications are now open on the VEC website, and those interested are urged to apply early. As Ms Fleming puts it, “This is your chance to help make the election happen – fairly, smoothly, and with integrity.”
Applications are open until 25 May, at careers.vic.gov.au/job/senior-election-officials-855486
