Melbourne’s Immigration Museum is set to host a weekend celebration of Cultural Diversity Week on Saturday 22 March from 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday 23 March from 10 am to 5 pm. This free event invites visitors to enjoy a variety of performances, family-friendly activities, international cuisines, and a maker’s market.

The museum’s courtyard will feature live music and dance performances representing various cultures. Attendees can explore stalls offering handmade crafts and products from local artisans, providing an opportunity to engage with Melbourne’s diverse creative community.

As part of the Sunday programme, the event will showcase Whelk, an ambient music and poetry collaboration between multi-instrumentalist Genevieve Fry and artist Manisha Anjali. Performing from 3 to 4 pm in the Courtyard, Whelk blends ethereal harp, textural percussion, and otherworldly incantations, creating an immersive auditory experience. Fry’s compositions draw from the natural world, encouraging introspection, while Anjali’s poetic expressions explore the language of dreams, exile, and the more-than-human world.

This event aligns with the broader Cultural Diversity Week celebrations occurring across Victoria from 17 to 23 March 2025. The theme for this year, ‘Embrace the Journey, Shape Our Future,’ encourages reflection on personal cultural stories and those of others, fostering understanding and connection within the community.

In addition to the festivities at the Immigration Museum, the Victorian Multicultural Festival will take place at Grazeland in Spotswood from 21 to 23 March. This festival offers entertainment and cuisine from around the world, further highlighting the state’s multicultural identity.

The Immigration Museum’s weekend celebration provides a platform for individuals and families to experience and appreciate the rich cultural diversity that defines Melbourne. By participating in these events, attendees can contribute to a more inclusive and connected community.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.
