The Andhra Association of Queensland (AAQ) hosted a splendid Sankranthi celebration on 12 January 2025 at the Logan West Community Centre, bringing together over 550 attendees for a day brimming with joy, traditions, and cultural pride. This event reaffirmed the importance of community gatherings in nurturing bonds and celebrating heritage.
Spearheading the celebration were founders Ram Junnuri and Uma Chilukoti, whose unwavering passion for preserving Telugu culture laid the foundation for this extraordinary event. Their leadership, coupled with the dedicated efforts of Sudha Shanker and the organising team, ensured the day unfolded seamlessly, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
The day began with a vibrant Muggulu (Rangoli) competition, where participants showcased intricate and creative designs, embodying the cultural richness of this traditional art form. Kite flying soon followed, transforming the skies into a tapestry of colour and reconnecting attendees with a beloved Sankranthi tradition.
The Gobbemmalu ceremony brought together young girls and women to offer prayers for prosperity and unity, while the delightful Bommala Pelli (doll wedding) charmed children and adults alike. This carefully staged ceremony recreated a traditional wedding with dolls, celebrating joy and community values.
Bhogi Pallu, a ritual showering children with flowers, fruits, and sweets, added a warm intergenerational touch. Elders shared stories and experiences, fostering a deep sense of belonging and cultural continuity. The traditional dress ramp walk was another highlight, as attendees donned stunning outfits, celebrating heritage through fashion. Special recognition went to Hari Panchumarthi for embodying the spirit of the event in authentic Haridasu attire.
Charismatic hosts Hari Panchumarthi, Archana Pattela, and Vidya Mallela ensured the celebration was lively and engaging, bringing energy and charm to the day. Their connection with the audience and seamless coordination added a unique vibrance to the event.
A sumptuous Sankranthi feast delighted attendees with traditional delicacies like Ariselu, Boorelu, and Avakaya, creating a culinary experience that resonated with everyone. Thoughtful return gifts for women and children added a personal touch, leaving attendees with cherished keepsakes.
The event also witnessed the launch of the AAQ website by special guest Sri Kiran Kumar Reddy, who emphasised the importance of cultural preservation. Other notable guests, including Preethi Suraj, Satya Seelam, and Rohit on Wheels, added to the occasion’s warmth and spirit.
Behind the scenes, the meticulous planning and execution by the AAQ team ensured every detail was accounted for. Special gratitude was extended to the organising committee and volunteers whose collective efforts made this event a resounding success.
The Sankranthi celebration exemplified the power of community and culture in bringing people together. It was a day to remember, where traditions were honoured, connections were deepened, and joy was shared.
