As the summer heat rolls on, the Allan Labor Government is encouraging Victorians to make the most of the state’s alternative healthcare options, keeping emergency departments clear for those in critical need. With a range of accessible and free services on offer, there’s no need to face long waits for non-life-threatening conditions.
Victoria’s network of 29 Urgent Care Clinics is available day and night, catering to walk-ins and pre-booked appointments. Staffed by experienced nurses and GPs, these clinics handle conditions such as sprains, minor fractures, cuts, and infections. Since their launch in September 2022, they’ve seen over 650,000 visitors, offering timely care that’s easing the burden on hospital emergency rooms.
For those needing advice or care without leaving home, the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) provides 24/7 video consultations with emergency nurses and doctors. This innovative service ensures that urgent, non-emergency cases get the attention they need without clogging up Triple Zero lines or hospital corridors.
Pharmacies are also playing a key role in providing essential care this summer. Nearly 800 are part of the Community Pharmacist Statewide Pilot, enabling access to medications like the oral contraceptive pill without the need for a GP appointment. This programme ensures that basic healthcare needs are met promptly and efficiently.
The government has invested $235 million over four years to expand the VVED, allowing it to assist over 1,000 patients daily. This investment supports paramedics and hospital staff by freeing up resources for life-threatening emergencies while providing a reliable alternative for non-urgent situations.
With extreme heat adding an extra layer of health risk, residents are being reminded to take simple precautions: stay hydrated, plan activities for cooler times of the day, and never leave children in parked cars. These small actions can prevent serious conditions like heatstroke and reduce unnecessary hospital visits.
Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas praised the efforts of healthcare workers, stating, “Our Urgent Care Clinics and Victorian Virtual Emergency Department are taking pressure off our emergency departments by offering care for Victorian families that need urgent, but not emergency care.” She added, “I’d like to thank our hardworking healthcare workers who will be continuing to provide levels of care over Christmas and New Year’s while many of us are taking a break.”
