South Australia has further solidified its position as a hub for the nation’s defence industry with the opening of SNC’s Australian headquarters at Lot Fourteen in Adelaide. The move comes after over a year of engagement with the Malinauskas Government, which has actively worked to attract international defence companies to the state.
SNC, a major US-based defence company with a global workforce of around 4,000 people, has established its Australian subsidiary, SNC AUS, joining the more than 160 organisations already based at Lot Fourteen. This innovation precinct, known for its world-class research and collaborative business environment, is home to leading entities in space, defence, and critical technologies.
The expansion of SNC into South Australia aligns with the state’s growing reputation as a key player in the global defence sector. The company’s focus will include cutting-edge technologies such as electronic warfare, unmanned platforms, and advanced software solutions. These will support the Australian Defence Force (ADF) as well as contribute to the AUKUS trilateral security partnership, enhancing the state’s strategic importance.
Premier Peter Malinauskas and Trade and Investment Minister Joe Szakacs both played pivotal roles in fostering the relationship with SNC. The company was first approached by the South Australian Government’s US trade office in 2023, and Premier Malinauskas reinforced the state’s defence capabilities during a trade mission to the US in May.
Stephen Mullighan, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, highlighted the significance of SNC’s move to Lot Fourteen, calling it a win for South Australia’s growing defence sector. “South Australia is cementing its reputation as the Defence State, with yet another global defence company expanding its footprint in Adelaide,” Mullighan said.
Joe Szakacs, Minister for Trade and Investment, also welcomed SNC’s presence in the state, noting that South Australia provides a unique blend of world-class research institutions, a skilled workforce, and a thriving business community. “We’re thrilled to welcome SNC to South Australia, a highly regarded addition to Lot Fourteen and our connected and coordinated defence and space ecosystem,” Szakacs said.
SNC’s decision to base its Australian operations at Lot Fourteen positions the company alongside some of the world’s leading aerospace and defence organisations, including the Australian Space Agency, SmartSat CRC, and the Australian Institute for Machine Learning. This collaborative environment is expected to drive innovation and foster further development of advanced technologies.
Stu Wildman, Senior Vice President of Business Development at SNC, expressed excitement about the strategic expansion into South Australia, stating that the move is a natural step in the company’s global growth. “We are excited to expand SNC’s global footprint to South Australia with the launch of SNC AUS,” Wildman said. “Our local presence at Lot Fourteen will help drive innovation and collaboration, augmenting Australia’s growing Industrial Base.”
SNC’s new Australian headquarters will further enhance the state’s already impressive defence capabilities, which span the land, maritime, air, space, and cyber domains. South Australia is home to seven of the world’s top 10 defence companies, reinforcing its status as a central hub for defence innovation and manufacturing.
This new addition to South Australia’s defence ecosystem marks a significant step towards ensuring the state remains at the forefront of the defence and aerospace industries, creating more opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and job creation in the sector.
