The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini, on its Navika Sagar Parikrama-II circumnavigation, made its first stop at Fremantle, Western Australia, from 9 to 24 November 2024. During the visit, the crew and support team engaged with prominent women leaders from Western Australia, spotlighting global collaboration and the growing presence of women in maritime pursuits.

Led by Sue Ellery MLC, Minister for Women’s Interests, the Western Australian delegation included Alanna Clohesy MLC, President of the Legislative Council; Sabine Winton MLA, Minister for Community Services; Meredith Hammat MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education & Multicultural Interests; Yaz Mubarakai MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Multicultural Interests; Dr Jags Krishnan MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier and Minister for Women’s Interests; Donna Faragher, Shadow Minister for Youth; and Merome Beard MLA, Member for North West Central. The event also saw participation from the Consul General and senior Indian Navy officers.

The Navika Sagar Parikrama-II expedition is helmed by two pioneering women officers, Lt Cdr Roopa A and Lt Cdr Dilna K, who have undergone rigorous preparation for this mission over three years. Their voyage spans over 21,600 nautical miles, with stops planned at four ports for essential refuelling and maintenance. The expedition underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to fostering gender diversity within its ranks.

At the gathering, the crew shared their journey and experiences with Western Australia’s leaders. Hon. Sue Ellery expressed her admiration for the officers’ dedication and the broader mission to amplify women’s roles in maritime professions. The event highlighted the strength of international partnerships in advancing gender equality and empowering women in fields often dominated by men.

The INSV Tarini’s circumnavigation highlights operational excellence and serves as an inspiring call for greater inclusivity. As the vessel continues its voyage, it symbolises progress, encouraging communities worldwide to champion women’s contributions across industries and beyond.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
