The Consulate General of India in Sydney has been reaching out to the Indian diaspora with a much-needed service—issuing Life Certificates at special consular camps. These certificates are crucial for Indian citizens, particularly pensioners, to prove their existence to access pensions and other entitlements from India.

On 17 November, a special camp was held at the Dennis Johnson Branch Library in Stanhope Gardens, NSW, providing the service to members of the community. The initiative is part of an ongoing effort by Indian consulates globally to simplify bureaucratic processes for citizens living abroad, ensuring their connection to home remains seamless.

The service doesn’t stop here. Another camp is scheduled for 24 November at the Ermington Community Centre, Parramatta. Open from 8 AM to 5 PM, this camp aims to cater to those who couldn’t make it to the earlier session or who live closer to the Parramatta area. The initiative has been welcomed by the diaspora, many of whom would otherwise have to navigate cumbersome procedures or travel long distances to complete this requirement.

Life Certificates are essential for retirees to continue receiving pensions from Indian authorities. The process, while straightforward in India, can be a logistical challenge for overseas citizens. By holding these camps, the consulate is offering a simple, community-focused solution.

For many, this service is more than just a convenience. It serves as a lifeline, maintaining a vital link to their roots and ensuring that entitlements earned through years of hard work are not interrupted. The Indian diaspora in Australia has appreciated the effort, with participants noting how the consulate’s proactive approach makes a real difference in their lives.

The next Special Consular Camp for issuing Life Certificates will be held in Parramatta on Sunday, 24 November 2024, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Ermington Community Centre, 6 River Road, Ermington, NSW 2115. Interested applicants are encouraged to attend in person, ensuring they bring all the necessary documents to complete the process efficiently.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
