The University of Wollongong (UOW) has officially opened its India campus in GIFT City, Gujarat, offering a slice of world-class education to students without the need for a passport. With its doors open, UOW India is now offering programmes like the Master of Financial Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Financial Technology, blending academic rigour with real-world application.
The launch also saw a moment of celebration for gender diversity in tech as Cerin Elsa Joji was named the first recipient of the Women Leaders in FinTech Scholarship. The initiative underscores UOW’s commitment to empowering women in the financial technology landscape.
A fresh collaboration with Odoo, a global open-source business software leader, was unveiled at the event. Odoo’s tools, spanning everything from CRM to eCommerce and accounting, will be integrated into UOW India’s curriculum, ensuring students graduate with industry-ready skills. This partnership complements IBM ICE’s existing role in crafting a forward-thinking syllabus that touches on AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and blockchain.
Michael Still, Chancellor of UOW, shared his excitement: “Launching UOW’s campus in GIFT City is a proud moment for our University. India has long been a hub of knowledge and innovation, and this campus represents more than growth—it’s about fostering deep connections and opening doors for students and communities.”
The Managing Director and Group CEO of UOW Global Enterprises, Marisa Mastroianni, highlighted the broader vision. “Students shouldn’t need to cross continents for Australia’s high-quality education. By establishing UOW India, we’re bringing global learning directly to their doorstep. Our first cohort will even enjoy a fully funded visit to our Dubai campus, embracing international exposure and collaborations.”
Beyond the academic offerings, the launch reflects a strengthening relationship between New South Wales and Gujarat, which has been nurtured since 2015 through a sister-state agreement. Rebecca McPhee, Deputy Secretary of Investment NSW, remarked, “The NSW Government is proud to have played a role in supporting UOW’s expansion into India. This is a testament to the strong ties between India and NSW and the immense potential of transnational education.”
The inauguration drew attention from academia, government, and industry leaders from both nations, signalling a new chapter in educational collaboration. With students at the heart of its mission, UOW India is set to turn the GIFT City campus into a hub of innovation, learning, and global connections.
