Victoria’s bustling multicultural events calendar is set to expand, as the Allan Labor Government announces further support for festivals and cultural gatherings throughout the state. The latest round of funding from the Multicultural Festivals and Events Program (MFE) will help communities celebrate their heritage while fostering inclusivity across regional and metropolitan areas.

Grants of up to $50,000 are now available for events scheduled between 1 January 2025 and 30 June 2025. The Regional Multicultural Festivals and Events Fund is also part of the new funding round, encouraging local communities to come together and showcase their rich diversity.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ingrid Stitt highlighted the program’s importance, saying the grants will provide more opportunities for Victorians to experience and share in the vibrant traditions of various cultures. From food festivals to performances, these events play a key role in connecting people across the state.

Since 2014, over $40 million has been directed toward nearly 10,000 multicultural events, showcasing Victoria’s commitment to celebrating diversity. Recent examples of funded events include Africare Community Services’ AfriVibes in Wodonga, a lively celebration of African culture, and the Chinese Alliance of Australia’s Moon Festival 2024 Celebration. Additionally, the Australia Mission of Sai Inc. held the inaugural Kingston Diwali, bringing together the community to enjoy the spirit of India’s Festival of Lights.

This round of funding prioritises applications from rural and regional areas, along with new and emerging communities facing recent humanitarian challenges. The government’s ongoing investment in multicultural celebrations demonstrates a continued commitment to inclusivity and cultural pride.

Minister Stitt expressed her enthusiasm for the program, emphasising its role in uniting communities: “We’re backing our diverse communities with funding that supports multicultural events and festivals, allowing people to share their traditions and celebrations with the wider Victorian community.”

With more opportunities on the horizon, Victorians can expect a packed calendar of festivals showcasing the best of the state’s cultural diversity.

Applications for the grants are now open, with submissions closing on 25 October 2024. Interested groups can find further details at vic.gov.au/multicultural-festivals-and-events-program.
