Perth’s housing crunch eased with major West Perth development boost

The Western Australian Government has taken a significant step towards addressing the growing need for housing in Perth by approving key amendments to the City of Perth’s local planning scheme. The changes, recommended by the Western Australia Planning Commission (WAPC), target three strategically located infill development sites in West Perth, covering more than 5,600 square metres on Troode Street.

These amendments are designed to open the door for increased residential and commercial development in this vital part of the city, which has been earmarked as a transit-oriented development precinct. By increasing plot ratio limits, the decision paves the way for higher-density housing and larger-scale commercial projects, which is expected to contribute to Perth’s ongoing urban renewal efforts.

Planning Minister John Carey has welcomed the changes, stressing the importance of infill development for Perth’s future. Carey remarked that inner-city developments like the one planned for West Perth are key to creating a more vibrant, connected, and sustainable city by making better use of existing infrastructure while also increasing the variety and availability of housing.

Carey also pointed out that the original proposal from the City of Perth did not fully seize the opportunity to enhance this strategic area. His comments highlight a shared responsibility between various levels of government to ensure that housing supply keeps pace with demand, particularly in areas where development potential is high but previously underutilised.

The decision underscores the State Government’s broader strategy to address housing shortages across Western Australia. With a record $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness initiatives, alongside ongoing planning reforms aimed at cutting red tape, the government is actively seeking to streamline development processes to meet the current housing crisis head-on.

For Perth’s inner-city residents, these changes promise more housing options and a fresh injection of life into the West Perth area. This development will also serve as an example of how smart planning and government action can unlock the potential of urban areas that have been overlooked for too long.
