The new public open spaces will make sure F.S. Garside Park becomes the local centrepiece for community sport and a place for families to come together to enjoy the outdoors: Parramatta MP Donna Davis

F.S. Garside Park, a cherished spot in North Granville, has reopened after a significant transformation, bringing a multitude of new facilities for the community to enjoy. This major redevelopment, backed by $17 million in funding from the NSW Government, has seen the park evolve into a versatile space with attractions for all ages.

The park now features a BMX pump track, multi-use sports court, and a playground equipped with nature play elements, climbing structures, and a flying fox. Picnic and barbecue areas, alongside newly installed fitness equipment, offer more reasons for families to gather and enjoy the outdoors. In addition, 58 parking spaces have been added, including provisions for disabled parking, making the park more accessible.

City of Parramatta’s chief executive, Gail Connolly PSM, expressed her excitement about the park’s renewal, highlighting that the project signals a new beginning for the North Granville community. She pointed out the extensive planting of native trees, shrubs, and groundcover plants, ensuring the park is not only functional but also environmentally sustainable.

‘This project is the benchmark for site remediation – righting the wrongs of the past and creating a vibrant space that is safe to explore’

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, praised the transformation of the former landfill site, noting that over 15,600 tonnes of contaminated soil were removed to create a safe and inviting space for the community. He emphasised that the park will serve as a local hub for sports and recreation, bringing the community together.

The sporting field, a key feature of the park, remains closed to allow the newly laid grass to establish. It is expected to open to the public in late 2024, providing a quality space for local sports events.

Parramatta MP Donna Davis reflected on the park’s new chapter, envisioning a future filled with community activities, from soccer matches to family picnics. She reaffirmed the NSW Government’s commitment to supporting public infrastructure projects like the F.S. Garside Park upgrade, which will benefit thousands of homes in the surrounding area.

This latest chapter in F.S. Garside Park’s history builds on its long-standing role as a recreational hub, dating back to its days as a soccer field in the 1930s. The park, named after Frank Sydney Garside, a dedicated figure in the local soccer community, continues to be a vital part of North Granville’s heritage.

With the completion of this upgrade, F.S. Garside Park is set to become a focal point for community gatherings and sporting events, ensuring it remains a beloved space for generations to come.
