The annual UK tour match featuring the Shaun Brown Australian Cricket Academy (SBCC) at Longley Lane never disappoints, and this year’s encounter was no exception. The visiting SBCC ‘Stars’ team faced off against the Wythenshawe ‘Hawks’ in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very last over.
The Hawks won the toss and opted to field, putting the Stars at bat first. The Stars quickly found their rhythm, amassing 32 runs before losing their first wicket. Steady contributions from all players saw them reach a respectable total of 115 runs in their 25 overs. Key wickets for the Hawks came from Liam McCoy (2), Zach Bolton, Bobby Braisdell, Morgan Platt, Sonny Ash, and James Gutteridge, each taking one. The standout batter for the Stars was L. Blizzard, remaining unbeaten with a score of 20.
Chasing a target of 116, the Hawks began their innings confidently. Alfie Walker scored 24, and Heetain Arora’s impressive 40 provided a strong foundation. Despite their confident start, the Stars’ bowlers, W. Tomlin and Nikhil Suresh, each took two wickets, applying pressure on the Hawks. Fielders from the Stars also played a crucial role, tightening gaps and making the Hawks work hard to maintain their run rate.
The unpredictable weather added to the challenge, with intermittent downpours and a biting wind making conditions tough for both teams. However, the determination to see the match through was evident as players continued despite the heavy drizzle.
As the match neared its climax, the Hawks needed 11 runs in the final over but fell short by 8 runs, concluding their innings at 107/9. Both teams exhibited valiant efforts in batting, bowling, and fielding, making it a match to remember.

Nikhil Suresh, who captained and scored 37 not out, led his team to a victory against Liverpool’s Merchant Taylors’ School earlier in the week, securing their second win with a score of 117 in 30 overs. Merchant Taylors’ were bowled out for 107 runs, marking another triumph for the Stars.
Post-match, N. Suresh from the Stars and Heetain Arora from the Hawks were honoured for their standout performances. Gratitude was extended to umpire Fred for officiating, Jane for scoring the match manually, and the catering and bar staff for keeping everyone refreshed. A special thanks to the parents and families who supported both teams through the evening.
The evening was wrapped up with a quote from scorer Jane about the double rainbows that appeared during the match: “If you don’t have rain, you don’t have rainbows.”
Congratulations to the Shaun Brown Australian Cricket Academy and Wythenshawe Hawks for a match well played. The SBCC continues their UK tour with high spirits and a passion for the game that bridges miles and fosters friendships.
Here’s looking forward to next year’s match already!
