A new chapter in Western Australia’s medical manufacturing industry is now underway with the completion of a cutting-edge pharmaceutical compounding centre in Perth. This advanced facility, established by Baxter Healthcare, is poised to be among the most sophisticated compounding centres in Australia, marking a significant milestone for both the state’s economy and its healthcare sector.

Located in Canning Vale, the new Baxter Healthcare site represents a considerable leap forward in the production of tailored medicines, including crucial cancer treatments. The centre will support local healthcare by providing lifesaving medications and contribute to the economic diversification of Western Australia.

With the construction phase now complete, the facility is gearing up to begin operations and is currently working towards obtaining its Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) licensing. Once fully operational, it will enhance Baxter Healthcare’s capacity to manufacture essential medicines, expanding its production by over 50 per cent.

The centre will create a substantial boost to local employment. Baxter Healthcare plans to increase its workforce in Western Australia by adding 20 new, highly skilled pharmaceutical manufacturing positions within the first three years of operation. This increase is expected to significantly impact the local job market, providing opportunities for skilled professionals and supporting the state’s ongoing economic development.

The project, which received strong backing from the Cook Government, was supported by a £4 million grant from the Investment Attraction Fund (IAF). This financial support was crucial in securing the facility for Western Australia and is part of a broader strategy to bolster the state’s economic stability through major, job-creating projects. The IAF, in its inaugural round, allocated nearly £24 million across seven Health and Medical Life Sciences sector projects, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing medical manufacturing capabilities and diversifying the state’s economy.

Premier Roger Cook highlighted the importance of the new facility in positioning Western Australia as a leader in medical manufacturing. “Under my Government, Western Australia is becoming a leader in medical manufacturing. Baxter Healthcare’s new facility is the best in the nation, and means we can produce more medicines right here in WA – saving lives and advancing our sovereign capability. Through the Investment Attraction Fund, we’re supporting major projects that diversify our economy and create quality local jobs for the future.”

The establishment of this state-of-the-art pharmaceutical compounding centre not only enhances the capacity for local medical production but also signifies a pivotal step in Western Australia’s strategic vision for economic and industrial growth. As the facility moves towards full operational status, its impact on the local job market and the broader healthcare landscape will continue to unfold, reinforcing the state’s position as a key player in the national and global medical manufacturing sectors.
