Australia Women’s coach Shelley Nitschke will remain in charge of the world’s top-ranked side until at least 2029 after signing a three-year contract extension with Cricket Australia.

Nitschke, appointed head coach in 2022 on an initial four-year deal, is set to guide the national team through a packed international schedule that includes multiple ICC tournaments and high-profile bilateral series over the next three years.

Her tenure has coincided with another successful period for the Australian women’s side, which claimed gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and won the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Australia also secured the 2022-25 ICC Women’s Championship and has retained the number one ICC ranking throughout her time in charge.

The team has continued to hold every bilateral series trophy during that period, although expectations remain high heading into the next phase of international competition, particularly with several younger players continuing to establish themselves in the squad.

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said Nitschke had helped maintain Australia’s standing while overseeing a changing playing group.

He said the coach had managed the transition well as emerging talent entered the national set-up through the growing participation base in women’s cricket across the country.

Nitschke described the extension as a privilege and said the group remained motivated despite its recent achievements.

“We’ve achieved a great deal together, but there’s also enormous motivation around what this group can accomplish in the years ahead,” she said.

“There are some major events and exciting challenges on the horizon and I’m looking forward to helping guide the team through the next phase.”

Australia’s next assignment will be the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales, beginning next month. The side opens its campaign against South Africa at Old Trafford in Manchester on 13 June before group matches against Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Pakistan and India.

Warm-up matches against South Africa and England are also scheduled ahead of the tournament. The final will be played at Lord’s on 5 July.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
