The 2024 Indoor Cricket National Championships (ICNC) wrapped up with a spectacular win for the Queensland U14 Girls team, who took home the title and captured the hearts of cricket enthusiasts across the nation. Held from 29 June to 13 July at Melbourne’s Casey Stadium, this prestigious event showcased the finest young talents in Australian indoor cricket, and the Queensland Girls’ team shone with their exceptional performance, determination, and teamwork.
Over 800 players and officials came together to compete across four senior and six junior divisions. The U14 Queensland Girls’ journey to victory featured a series of gripping matches, culminating in an impeccable performance in the grand final. Their unity and resilience were key to their success, as they travelled, stayed, and played together, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship.
Coach Michael Zorko, reflecting on the championship, praised the team’s determination, stating, “We pulled off the great escape! Back-to-back Cricket Australia Indoor U14 Girls National Champions—Queensland Cricket Indoor. After Plans A, B, C, and D got scrapped, we rallied and fought like Queenslanders. We had to be perfect in our last three games, and our 11-player squad pulled it off.”
One standout player was Uditi Ratnala, whose remarkable skills and consistent performance were pivotal in securing the championship. Her achievement serves as an inspiration to young girls in the community, showing that with hard work and perseverance, dreams can be realised.
The Queensland U14 Girls team played eight preliminary games before advancing to the finals. Coach Zorko praised the team’s flawless batting in the preliminary round and their perfect timing and execution in the grand final. Assistant Coach Ella Harvey and team manager Leanne Brookes also received recognition for their invaluable contributions to the team’s success. The support from families and corporate sponsors, including major sponsor Century Pools Queensland and community sponsor Bunnings Warehouse Australia, was instrumental in the team’s achievements.
Joel Morrison, Cricket Australia General Manager of Events and Operations, expressed his excitement about the event, saying, “The Indoor Cricket National Championships is a fantastic event showcasing the best Australian indoor cricketers. We are thrilled to have it back at Casey this year. Almost 100,000 people play indoor cricket in Australia, with the fast and exciting format providing opportunities to compete all year round. The ICNC plays a key role in the Australian Cricket pathway and provides an opportunity for players to represent Australia later in the year.”
Noelene Duff PSM, City of Casey Chair of Administrators, shared her pride in hosting the championships, stating, “The City of Casey is pleased to host this year’s 2024 Indoor Cricket National Championships, where we’ll see some of the best junior and open age indoor cricketers play off for the championships at our very own Casey Stadium. We wish all athletes great success as they strive to reach their sporting goals.”
The triumph of the Queensland U14 Girls at the ICNC is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support from their community. Uditi Ratnala’s success story is particularly inspiring, encouraging young girls in the Australian Indian community to pursue their passion for cricket. As the team basks in their victory, their journey serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with teamwork, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
