Air India flight AI183, which departed from Delhi on 18 July 2024 bound for San Francisco, was forced to make a precautionary landing at Krasnoyarsk International Airport (KJA) in Russia. The decision to land was made after the cockpit crew detected a potential issue in the cargo hold area. Thankfully, the aircraft landed safely with all 225 passengers and 19 crew members disembarking without incident.
With no Air India staff stationed at KJA, the airline has arranged for third-party support to assist passengers during this unexpected layover. Air India is also coordinating with government agencies and regulatory authorities to facilitate a ferry flight that will transport passengers to San Francisco as soon as possible. The airline is prioritising the health, safety, and security of all passengers and crew, providing updates as they become available.
In response to the incident, passengers and their families have taken to social media to express their concerns. Mayank Gupta, whose elderly mother is on the flight, tweeted about the difficulties faced due to lack of access to her medicine and snacks. Gupta described the situation as “inhumane” for elderly passengers, expressing sadness and anger.
Abhishek Sharma, another concerned family member, raised similar issues about his elderly aunt travelling on the flight. He questioned Air India’s preparedness and demanded food and comfort for the stranded passengers, while also seeking updates on their arrival in San Francisco.
Air India’s official responses have been consistent in reassuring the public about the passengers’ safety. The airline confirmed they are in constant touch with ground colleagues at KJA, acknowledging the inconvenience but stressing that all passengers are safe. Efforts are underway to ensure passengers receive the necessary assistance and comfort while they wait for the ferry flight.
As of now, there is no confirmed time for the ferry flight’s departure, but Air India has committed to operating it as soon as possible. The airline continues to monitor the situation closely and promises further updates to keep passengers and their families informed.
