The Northern Territory Government’s Screen Territory Program is helping to foster the careers of local filmmakers through its SPARK Short Film Initiative. The program, which received a $90,000 boost from the Territory Government, aims to support emerging screen practitioners and provide them with the tools and resources needed to develop their own short films.

Three early-career screen professionals will receive $30,000 each to participate in the program, which will see them create their own short films under the guidance of industry leaders. The theme for this year’s SPARK initiative is “Courage,” and all films will be premiered at the Darwin International Film Festival later this year.

As part of the funding agreement, successful applicants must commit to using local production crew, further boosting jobs and opportunities in the Territory’s growing screen industry. The program has attracted some of the Territory’s upcoming creative talents, with previous SPARK initiatives producing a stellar lineup of films.

The upgraded SPARK short film initiative, launched in 2023, has proved to be a success, and this year’s program is expected to build on that momentum. With the support of industry experts such as Panavision, Trackdown Studios, Rainfall Creations, and The Post Lounge, the successful applicants will be able to create high-quality productions that have the potential to qualify for entry into the prestigious Australian Academy of Cinema and Television (AACTA) awards in the Best Short Film category.

Chief Minister Eva Lawler said, “My Government is creating working and training opportunities across all sectors. We are thrilled to see the Northern Territory host yet another major screen production, which will showcase our unique culture, creative talent, and unrivalled locations to a global audience. SPARK 2024 is a unique opportunity for our emerging filmmakers to showcase their talents and to forge a career in the vibrant Australian screen industry.”
