Melbourne commuters brace yourselves for a week of significant disruptions across both road and public transport networks. From Friday, 5 April to Thursday, 11 April, multiple projects will impact travel times and routes, demanding extra patience and planning from all.

On the roads, the Pyrites Creek Bridge Project will see the Melbourne-bound lanes of the Western Freeway close overnight on Thursday, 11 April. Motorists should expect detours via the Old Western Highway and prepare for shared traffic lanes on the westbound bridge for the following 10 weeks. The Metro Tunnel Project will also cause the closure of southbound lanes on St Kilda Road between Dorcas Street and Toorak Road starting Sunday, 7 April, requiring detours via Dorcas Street and Kings Way.

Further afield, the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road Upgrade will see closures and detours in place until mid-2024, while the West Gate Tunnel Project will necessitate overnight closures on Thursday, 4 April. The Waurn Ponds Duplication will also disrupt traffic around Fyans Street, South Geelong from 10 April, and the Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road Upgrade will close Ballarto Road, Pakenham South to eastbound traffic for a week from Monday, 8 April.

Public transport users are not spared, with Yarra Trams track renewal works replacing trams with buses on Route 67 and diverting Route 3 trams from 10 April. The Metro Trains maintenance and renewal program will see buses replace trains on the Upfield and Sunbury lines from Friday, 5 April, and direct services to Flinders Street for the Cranbourne, Pakenham, and Craigieburn lines over the same weekend.

Looking ahead, further disruptions are expected with buses replacing trains on various lines including the Hurstbridge, Glen Waverley, Belgrave, Lilydale, Alamein, Sunbury, Cranbourne, and Pakenham lines over the following weekends. Coaches will also replace trains on sections of the Geelong and Warrnambool lines from 13 April to 21 April.

For the latest updates and to plan your journey, visit bigbuild.vic.gov.au, traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au for real-time traffic conditions, or ptv.vic.gov.au for public transport information. With a little forethought and flexibility, navigating Melbourne’s transport network during this period can be manageable
