Parramatta is setting a new standard for urban convenience, as it announces the transition of its CBD parking meters to a completely cashless system starting April 1. This innovative move will see the central business district’s on-street parking facilities embrace a more streamlined payment process, eliminating the need for coins.

With the switch, 23 parking meters across prominent CBD streets like George, Grose, Hunter, Phillip, and Sorrell will be upgraded to cashless machines. This overhaul is part of a broader initiative that will result in all 224 parking meters in Parramatta’s CBD becoming cashless. The move is expected to significantly benefit workers, students, and visitors who frequent the area, offering them a hassle-free parking experience.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber highlighted the shift towards digital payment methods, noting the increasing preference for contactless transactions among the public. He pointed out that over the past year, a staggering 94% of parking payments were made using mobile devices or cards, underscoring the community’s readiness for this change.

The decision to go cashless is seen as a response to the evolving needs of the city’s residents and visitors. By eliminating the option of coin payments, the city council aims to reduce the occurrence of parking meter jams and enhance the overall efficiency of the parking system. This move is also anticipated to streamline the parking process, making it quicker and more user-friendly.

Under the new system, payments at these cashless parking meters can be made through the EasyPark app, as well as major credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, and AMEX. This development is a testament to Parramatta’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve urban infrastructure and services, making daily activities like parking more convenient for everyone in the CBD.
