Legendary SBS Broadcaster Les Murray

Recognising the extraordinary contributions of refugees in Australia, the Les Murray Award for Refugee Recognition is once again inviting nominations. Presented by SBS and Australia for UNHCR, this prestigious award honours the legacy of the late Les Murray AM, a renowned sports broadcaster and refugee from Hungary, who became a beloved figure in Australian media.

Les Murray, acclaimed for hosting “The World Game” on SBS, arrived in Australia as a young refugee in 1956. His journey from Hungary to becoming an iconic Australian figure embodies the spirit of resilience and success that this award seeks to celebrate. Trudi Mitchell, CEO of Australia for UNHCR, emphasises the award’s focus on those who have significantly impacted their communities through arts, sports, leadership, and more.

The award not only commemorates Les Murray’s remarkable life but also shines a light on former refugees who have made substantial contributions in various fields. James Taylor, Managing Director of SBS, remarked on the award as a fitting tribute to Les Murray’s memory, encouraging nominations from a wide spectrum of professions, including authors, artists, actors, community leaders, sports personalities, filmmakers, and journalists.

Past winners of the award reflect its diverse reach. In 2023, Anyier Yuol, known for her work in sport, women’s empowerment, and refugee advocacy, was honoured. The inaugural award in 2022 was presented to Danijel Malbasa, a lawyer from Melbourne with roots in the former Yugoslavia.

The award includes a $10,000 prize, provided by SBS, to further the cause of positive refugee awareness. Prospective nominees are urged to submit their applications to LMA@unrefugees.org.au. Applications should comprise a brief biography, work examples, details of community involvement, and two references.

With a closing date of 29 February 2024, the award stands as a testament to the enduring contributions of refugees to Australian society. Further details can be found at www.unrefugees.org.au/lesmurray, a portal for both inspiration and information on this remarkable initiative.
