Suhani Shah is set to add an element of intrigue and mystique to Melbourne’s bustling RISING festival this winter. Shah, an Indian mentalist, magician, and YouTube phenomenon with over 2 million Instagram followers, is gearing up to redefine mentalism with her upcoming performances scheduled for 13-15 June.
Unlike traditional magicians, Shah’s act transcends the simple trickery of sleight of hand. Instead, she engages deeply with the psyche, unveiling the hidden secrets and unpredictable elements of the human mind. Her ability to blend charismatic showmanship with complex psychological illusions offers audiences an engaging, thought-provoking experience.
At 34, Shah has risen to international fame, now holding the title of the world’s most subscribed magician on YouTube, surpassing magic icons such as David Blaine, Penn & Teller, and Derren Brown. Notably, a recent video featuring her mind-reading skills with cricket legend Ricky Ponting garnered over 15 million views, showcasing her broad appeal and magnetic charisma.
RISING, known for transforming Melbourne into a vibrant hub of arts and culture during the colder months, extends from 1-16 June. This year’s lineup is particularly robust, featuring a range of acts spanning music, theatre, and dance, and culminating in a massive 16-night celebration featuring 116 events and 651 artists.
The festival will take over various city venues, streets, and hidden spaces with large-scale installations and free public events, enhancing the city’s winter atmosphere. Among the many highlights, the festival will feature the Day Tripper lineup on 3rd June, a festival-within-a-festival offering eight hours of live music across three stages under one ticket.
In addition to Shah’s performances, RISING 2024 includes an array of local and international talents. Australian music icons Dirty Three will perform a third show after quickly selling out their initial dates, demonstrating the festival’s high demand and the magnetic pull of its featured artists.
Other notable acts include the avant-garde presentations at the Night Trade made easy by Up, which blends psychic readings, karaoke, and a range of dance and art classes into a compelling club program that spans genres from classical music to R&B and techno.
One of the festival’s significant new features is a late-night club experience, offering an eclectic mix of music, performance, and art that promises to keep festival-goers engaged into the early hours.
For those looking to indulge in a more sensory and unusual experience, Universal Everything’s late-night exhibition at ACMI, in partnership with RISING, combines cutting-edge technology with live performances, creating an immersive environment that transcends traditional festival offerings.
