Strong earthquake off the west coast of Japan

Japan and the Philippines are on high alert following a powerful earthquake that rocked regions in both countries, triggering major tsunami warnings. Japan’s national broadcaster, NHK, has reported this urgent warning in the wake of the quake, which struck north of Japan’s main island.

The Japan Meteorological Agency pinpointed the epicenter in Ishikawa and nearby prefectures, with one quake reaching a preliminary magnitude of 7.4. The U.S. Geological Survey also recorded a significant tremor, estimating it at a magnitude of 7.5.

Ishikawa prefecture is under a dire warning, with anticipated tsunami waves potentially reaching heights of up to 5 meters. Authorities have issued urgent evacuation advisories, particularly for coastal residents in Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures. These areas are expected to face the brunt of the tsunami waves.

This seismic event is part of a series of strong quakes that have been shaking Japan’s western areas, leading to heightened tsunami alerts. The entire northwestern coast of Honshu Island has been placed under varying levels of tsunami warnings and advisories, with Ishikawa receiving the most severe.

The impact of the earthquake extends beyond Japan’s borders. In the Philippines, the southern island of Mindanao felt the quake’s tremors, prompting local authorities to issue evacuation orders and tsunami warnings for the nation’s southwestern coasts.

The Philippine Seismology Agency, Phivolcs, has warned of tsunami waves potentially affecting the Philippines. Similarly, NHK has predicted waves of up to a meter high along Japan’s southwestern coast.

This quake, occurring on New Year’s Day, was felt as far as Tokyo and the Kanto area, indicating its extensive reach and intensity. It adds to a series of powerful earthquakes that have hit Japan earlier in the year, including a 7.5 magnitude quake in the Philippines, which had previously led to tsunami warnings along Japan’s southwestern coast.

Residents in both Japan and the Philippines are advised to remain vigilant and follow the guidance of local authorities to ensure their safety during this critical period.
