Steven John Miles, a seasoned politician and dedicated family man, has been announced as the new Premier of Queensland, succeeding Annastacia Palaszczuk. His journey to the state’s top political position is marked by a blend of steadfast commitment and strategic alliances within the Labor Party.

Born on 15 November 1977, Miles has been a crucial figure in Queensland’s political landscape. Since May 2020, he has served as the Deputy Premier and represented Murrumba in the Queensland Legislative Assembly. His political journey also includes his tenure as the member for Mount Coot-tha from 2015 to 2017.

The transition to the role of Premier came after Palaszczuk’s resignation and was cemented by a crucial late-night deal between union and factional leaders. This strategic move, coupled with the withdrawal of his rival Shannon Fentiman from the race, cleared the path for Miles’ ascendancy. His affiliation with the dominant left faction of the Labor Party and the backing from the United Workers Union have been instrumental in his rise.

Balancing his political life, Miles is a family man, married to Kim McDowell, and a father to three children. His affinity for the Brisbane Broncos, a prominent rugby league club, reflects his connection to local interests and community spirit.

Miles steps into the role at a time when Queensland faces significant challenges, particularly the housing crisis in Brisbane. Moreover, the state is gearing up to host the 2032 Olympics, a monumental event that will thrust Queensland into the global limelight. His leadership and decision-making in these areas will be crucial for the state’s future.

The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has extended congratulations to Miles, anticipating his exceptional leadership for Queensland. Similarly, Shannon Fentiman, after stepping down from the leadership race, has expressed support for Miles, emphasising the need for unity and focus on delivering for Queenslanders. Her recognition of Miles as a longstanding friend and capable leader underlines a united front within the party as they gear up for the next year’s election.

Miles’ partnership with Treasurer Cameron Dick, who is set to become the Deputy Premier, forms a robust leadership team. This duo is expected to navigate the complexities of their roles while retaining their current portfolios.

The leadership change marks a pivotal moment for Queensland, especially with major events and challenges on the horizon. Miles’ blend of political acumen and personal values positions him as a leader ready to confront these challenges head-on. His actions and policies in the coming months will be a testament to his readiness to steer Queensland through its current issues and towards a prosperous future on the world stage.
