The 15th Indian Film Festival Melbourne was announced by the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Professor Margaret Gardner AC, at an IFFM industry event in Mumbai. Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM, IFFM Festival Director, joined prominent figures from the Indian film industry. This marked a pivotal moment for IFFM, unveiling plans for its 15th-year celebrations in August 2024.

IFFM 2024 will open on 15 August, and will feature all the festival favourites including the Indian Independence Day Celebrations (flag hoisting), IFFM Awards night, IFFM Dance Competition and IFFM Closing Night.

This year, IFFM introduces a new initiative named IFFM Baari, meaning “House” in Bengali. Designed as an inclusive space, IFFM Baari aims to foster collaboration and engagement between established leaders in creative industries and emerging voices from South Asian communities. The hub will support diverse creative narratives through events such as keynote speeches, panel discussions, networking, and comedy.

Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM expressed the significance of IFFM Baari, stating, “It opens doors for collaboration, propelling Indian cinema into the Australian market and reinforcing the deep cultural ties between the two nations. As we celebrate 15 years of IFFM as a groundbreaking festival, Baari marks a new chapter in our journey.”

This year’s festival will feature the premiere of “My Melbourne,” a groundbreaking film series set in Melbourne, mentored by renowned filmmakers Rima Das, Kabir Khan, Imtiaz, and Onir. With a focus on LGBTQAI+ community, disability, race, and gender, the film series aims to authentically reflect diverse narratives and experiences. “My Melbourne” is a collaboration with Vic Screen and Screen Australia.

Celebrated Indian actress Shabana Azmi received the IFFM Excellence Award at the event. Renowned for her powerful performances and advocacy for social causes, Azmi was recognized for her four-decade career and multiple accolades, including five National Film Awards.

In conjunction with the announcement, IFFM launched the ‘Shabana Special’ on its streaming platform, offering six classic films by Shabana Azmi for free viewing across Australia. Viewers also have the option to donate to the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.

The Honourable Margaret Gardner praised the festival, saying, “We are indeed fortunate to have this rich cultural event in Victoria.” The festival promises a vibrant celebration of Indian cinema and cultural diversity in Melbourne.
