The holiday season, often considered a time of joy and family reunions, can be a particularly challenging period for those grappling with domestic and family violence (DFV). Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill is taking a stance against this grim reality with this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal focusing on shedding light on family violence.

A number of community organisations are set to benefit from the funds raised through this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. These funds aim to provide financial relief to residents who have suffered from domestic and family violence. The Mayor expressed concern over the pervasive issue of family violence, stating that it is a pressing concern not just across Australia but also in Townsville. She invites community organisations in the city to fill out an expression of interest so that the Council can appropriately allocate the funds.

In a plea for public support, Mayor Hill urged Townsville residents to consider donating to the cause in the lead-up to Christmas. “Every dollar can make a difference in the life of a local who has experienced family violence,” she said. Donations are being accepted through the Council’s website, making it easy for residents to contribute.

To make this year’s appeal even more special, a Gala Cocktail Party is also on the schedule. This glitzy event will feature drinks, canapés, grazing and dessert tables, live entertainment, as well as auctions and a raffle. Notably, BMD Group has joined forces with the Council as the platinum sponsor for the Gala Cocktail Party.

Daniel Hussey, BMD Constructions Regional Construction Manager, commented on their involvement, “As Australia’s largest privately owned civil contractor, we are extremely honoured to extend our support to those who need it most.” BMD’s commitment to community relationships and family values resonated well with the cause, making them a fitting partner for this initiative.

The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is more than just a fundraising event; it’s a signal to those suffering that their community stands with them. It also adds another layer to the ongoing national discussion on domestic and family violence, an issue that affects countless lives but is often left in the shadows, even more so during the festive season.

By focusing this year’s appeal on family violence, the Townsville City Council is doing its part to pull the issue into the spotlight and offer tangible support to those affected. This initiative also acts as a challenge to other communities and councils, nudging them to take similar compassionate actions.

So, as Townsville decks its halls this festive season, it does so with a sense of purpose and urgency. It aims not only to make merry but also to mend, offering a glimmer of hope to those for whom the holiday season has been less than joyful. With this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, Townsville sends a powerful message: it’s not just about lighting up Christmas trees, but also about lighting up lives.
