After an opening few days that lacked buzz, it’s safe to declare that the 2023 Cricket World Cup has finally come alive. Host nation India, in their tournament opener, clashed with the formidable five-time World Cup champions, Australia.
Despite a horrendous early phase during their run chase, India emerged triumphant, sealing a resounding victory by six wickets.

Kohli, despite a lifeline on 12 when dropped by Mitchell Marsh, embarked on an innings of sheer brilliance. His sublime 85 not only showcased his impeccable technique but also testified to his supreme fitness. Amidst his six boundaries, his 47 singles underscored his ability to scavenge runs diligently, even on a challenging wicket.
In the crucible of this high-stakes encounter, Virat Kohli’s unwavering resolve, exemplified by his astounding average of 89 in successful ODI run chases, was palpable. In his pursuit of a challenging target, Kohli found a kindred spirit in KL Rahul, whose unwavering commitment and nerves of steel shone brightly. As Rahul approached a well-deserved century, he lofted the ball toward the boundary with the intention of reaching the milestone. Fate, however, had other plans, as the ball sailed over the rope for a resounding six, clinching victory. In that fleeting moment, Rahul’s mix of despair and jubilation gave way to a wry smile, acknowledging that securing the win held greater significance than personal milestones. Rahul would finish unbeaten on 97* that could have been a century on any other day.
Australia, after winning the toss and choosing to bat, appeared poised to set a decent target, reaching 110-2. However, fate had different plans as the Australian innings unravelled under the relentless onslaught of India’s spin triumvirate: Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and the seasoned Ravichandran Ashwin. This trio collectively dismantled the Australian batting order, accounting for six vital wickets. From a position of strength, Australia inexplicably capitulated, losing eight wickets for a mere 89 runs, eventually posting a modest 199 bowled out inside their allotted 50 overs.
The pivotal moment in Australia’s downfall was masterminded by Ravindra Jadeja. His delivery, a candidate for the “ball of the World Cup,” pitched on middle and leg, veered sharply, and crashed into the off stump, dismissing Steve Smith on 46. Jadeja’s spell included three significant scalps in just 11 deliveries, shattering Australia’s hopes of setting India a challenging total.
Marnus Labuschagne, who had appeared well-set with a crafty 27, was tempted into an ill-fated hard sweep that found the edge, neatly pouched by wicketkeeper KL Rahul. In the same over, Alex Carey’s attempt at a defensive shot was thwarted by the turn, leaving the umpire with no option but to raise the dreaded finger. Three additional wickets fell prey to India’s spin arsenal, emphasizing their effectiveness.
Australia’s struggles against spin were laid bare as their batsmen could only manage a meagre run rate of 3.47 runs per over against India’s world class spinners.
The scoreboard may have suggested a treacherous pitch, but the truth was simpler. India executed their bowling plan with precision, forcing Australia’s batsmen into playing 171 dot balls and disrupting their rhythm. Restricting Australia to 199 was not merely an achievement; it was a dream start to the tournament for India.
At the heart of cricket’s philosophy lies a fundamental truth – adapt to the conditions and react accordingly. The ability to read and adapt is crucial at the international level. This philosophy was apparent as India embarked on their run chase, pursuing 200. Ishan Kishan, filling in for the sidelined Shubman Gill, failed to make an impact, getting out for a duck and playing a loose shot. Shreyas Iyer, coming in at number four, also failed to get off the mark instinctively playing away from his body instead of adapting to the conditions on hand.
Amidst the early turmoil, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul emerged as saviours. Initial uncertainties gave way to a resolute partnership. Kohli displayed unparalleled concentration and physical prowess, whilst KL Rahul, initially favouring cut shots, astutely adapted his approach to capitalize on the conditions.
Their commanding 165-run partnership steered India to victory with six wickets in hand. Kohli and Rahul’s impeccable performance underscored that the supposed pitch demons were, in reality, exaggerated by ill-conceived shot selection.
India’s spinners laid the foundation with their remarkable performance, dismissing Australia for under 200. Although India encountered a brief nightmare during their chase, they ultimately secured a much-needed victory, collecting two vital points.
As the cricketing caravan advances, Australia heads to Lucknow for an encounter with a fiery South Africa on Thursday. Meanwhile, India sets its sights on Delhi, where they will confront a passionate Afghanistan on Wednesday, promising yet another electrifying week in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
