Discover the highlights of the recent Vaisakhi and Khalsa Sajna Divas celebrations in Townsville, Australia

The Townsville Sikh community came together to celebrate Vaisakhi and Khalsa Sajna Divas on 14 April 2023 and it continued for three days with great enthusiasm and fervour.

The event commenced with the Akhand Path, the continuous recitation of the Sikh holy scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which lasted for a remarkable 48 hours. The dedicated volunteers took turns reading from the sacred text without interruption, day and night, ensuring that the recitation remained continuous throughout the entire duration of the event. This feat of devotion and endurance exemplified the deep reverence and commitment of the Townsville Sikh community towards their faith and traditions. The Akhand Path was performed with utmost reverence and was a significant highlight of the Vaisakhi and Khalsa Sajna Divas celebrations in Townsville.

The event was attended by Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike, with many people joining the procession to show their support for the community. Along the way, the participants distributed food, known as langar, to the public. This is a Sikh tradition that is practised worldwide, where free vegetarian food is served to all regardless of caste, colour or religion.

The celebrations culminated at The Townsville Gurudwara Sahib, where the attendees gathered for a cultural program. The program featured kirtan, traditional Sikh music, and speeches by community leaders, highlighting the significance of Vaisakhi and Khalsa Sajna Divas.

Sri Amarjit Singh ji expressed his gratitude towards the local authorities and the Townsville community for their support and participation in the celebrations. He said, “The Sikh community is proud to be part of this multicultural society, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share our rich culture and heritage with everyone.”

Overall, the celebrations of Vaisakhi and Khalsa Sajna Divas in Townsville were a great success, with people from different backgrounds coming together to celebrate Sikh culture and values. The event was a testament to the inclusivity and diversity of the Townsville community.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.
